Hooper Avenue is the chain corridor, the one with the traffic volume to support a restaurant like Tommy's Tavern + Tap, which opened its thirteenth New Jersey location there in April 2026, taking over the storefront next to Olive Garden that TGI Fridays vacated. The opening adds another chain restaurant to the Hooper Avenue corridor.
Main Street and Washington Street, a mile or so away, run on a completely different logic. There's no chain anchor pulling drive-by traffic. Instead, independent restaurants line roughly the same walkable stretch.

Two Weekdays That Anchor the Week
The Toms River Recreation Department's Summer Concert Series runs Tuesdays at Shelter Cove Beach into early September, with a fireworks display after every performance. This year's lineup runs from Amish Outlaws on June 23 through a Motown act that closes out the series on September 1, with a run of regional cover bands filling the Tuesdays in between. There's also a companion Kids Concert Series on select Thursdays.
Wednesday belongs to the Downtown Toms River Farmers' Market, which sets up every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Town Hall Courtyard on Washington Street, running from June 17 through October 14. It's not a novelty pop-up. The market includes multiple New Jersey farms selling produce, a New Jersey winery, distillery, and brewery pouring on site, and a rotating list of vendors selling honey, baked goods, and specialty foods that have built enough of a following to bring shoppers back week after week.
Put those two weekdays side by side and the pattern becomes obvious: downtown activity isn't limited to the weekend.
The Main Street Restaurant Row
The Main Street restaurant lineup adds another reason to stop downtown.
Crave built its identity as a breakfast and lunch spot. Taco-Tastic, Battle River Brewing, Capones, A Thyme For All Seasons, Water Street Bar and Grille, and Shut Up and Eat round out the same downtown stretch.
What This Means If You Already Live Here
If you already live in or near downtown Toms River, none of this changes what you do this week. You've probably already been to the Wednesday market, or at least know it's there. You've probably caught a Tuesday concert at Shelter Cove, or noticed the fireworks from a few blocks away.
What's worth noticing is what that pattern says about the neighborhood underneath it. A downtown that schedules its two biggest weekly draws for a Tuesday and a Wednesday isn't optimizing for visitors. It's built for the people who are already going to be here in October, when the farmers market wraps up for the season, and in November, when the concert series is a memory and Main Street's restaurants continue serving the community through the quieter season.
